    Entry Requirements: A good Honours degree, normally a JBM-accredited BEng degree with 2ii Honours or better, or a BSc Honours degree of class 2i or in Civil or Structural Engineering (or equivalent professional or recognised overseas qualifications), or sufficient and relevant industrial work experience. Applicants with a JBM-accredited IEng degree will be treated on an individual basis, but must have attained competences in the core mechanics subject areas of civil/structural engineering at undergraduate level. The University of Glamorgan’s IPG/Masters package provides an alternative entry route to the award for students with lower qualifications and no appropriate civil and/or environmental engineering work experience, or for students who have the required academic qualifications but without fluency in English.

    The MSc Civil and Structural Engineering award offers new graduates and practitioners an opportunity to establish or consolidate their
    career as a civil or structural design engineer. This PgD/MSc programme is approved for the Further Learning Programme (formerly Matching Sections) at Chartered Engineer (CEng) level by the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT).

    All design-related modules will be taught in accordance with the new structural Eurocodes, which provide the most up-to-date specialist
    knowledge and technical competences. As well as emphasising analytical and problem-solving skills, the course also includes project planning and
    contract management training that are crucial to the success of any civil and structural engineering work.

    This course will improve your technical knowledge of structures and sustainability and enhance your career prospects.

    Course Content

    The Civil and Structural Engineering award consists of the following modules:

        * Advanced Civil Engineering Materials
        * Integrative Project Planning and Management
        * Geo-environmental Engineering
        * Advanced Structural Analysis
        * Design and Strengthening of Concrete Structures
        * Dissertation

    Plus one or two elective modules from the following:

        * Design of Steel and Composite Structures
        * Structural Dynamics and Earthquake Engineering
        * Design of Timber and Masonry Structures

    How To Study

    Taught modules are delivered between September and May. Applicants working in industry may apply to study some individual modules as short courses on a day-release or block-delivery basis. Modules are delivered through a combination of formal lectures, tutorials and seminars by experienced academic staff with significant expertise in their specialist areas. Prominent industrial experts will be invited to give supplementary lectures and chair seminars. In addition, you will undertake a research project using the Faculty’s excellent laboratory facilities, and complete a dissertation on a chosen topic of interest.

    Assessment methods vary; some modules are assessed completely through coursework, while others are assessed by a combination of design projects and a formal examination.

    Graduates of the MSc Civil and Structural Engineering have a variety of employment opportunities; you can develop a career as a structural engineer or technical manager with leading international consultancies, contractors, national and local consulting companies, as well as research and government organisations. You could also choose further study for a doctorate and develop an academic career.
