Comments about MSc Communications and Information Engineering - At the institution - Coventry - West Midlands
The course provides students with comprehensive training in the essential elements of modern communication and information engineering. The information-theoretic underpinnings are provided in conjunction with physical-layer aspects of both optical and radio transmission, as well as signal processing methods. Furthermore, the course covers developments in radio network architectures and deployment. The optional modules are topical and diverse, encompassing the design of application specific integrated circuits, micro-electromechanical systems and optical engineering. Cross-discipline options from the Department of Computer Science offer key insights into approaches for dealing with the explosion in data collected in modern society ('big data'). In particular, the course provides students with opportunites to study digital multimedia storage and communications technologies, data analytics and data mining, in terms of algorithms and goals in real-world problems.
To complement the taught modules, students carry out a significant individual research project, which will provide them with the opportunity to put their knowledge into practice. Students will also attend seminars on project planning/management, ethics, health & safety, report writing, library skills and career management, to help prepare them for the demands of the course and for future study or employment.
Graduates will be well equipped for employment opportunities in modern information and communication engineering, which is currently undergoing a revolution. Recent graduates occupy positions in a varierty of industries in the UK and worldwide, including core network provision, logistics, software support, and data communication equipment/services. The School has strong links with a number of leading telecommunications companies. Moreover, this course is the perfect platform for progression to a research degree.
The course sits firmly in the middle of information and communication technology, providing training in both the foundations and applications (drawn from recent research and industrial practice). For example, there is increased focus in industry on leveraging the recent explosion in social media data to make better informed decisions on how to invest in engineering infrastructure.
