  • Objectives
Like all health and social care professionals, qualified counsellors and psychotherapists face the constant need to update their knowledge and skills to meet the challenges presented by their clients and agencies. MSc Counselling Studies
  • Course description
What would you gain from joining our counselling team?

-Specialist knowledge of varied client groups, a range of practice contexts and new therapeutic approaches
-Confidence in understanding and using research methods to improve your own practice and service delivery
-Solid preparation for professional accreditation and progression
-A facility for critical analysis, building on your own judgement as a reflective practitioner

Our single modules are focused, ten week courses on specialist topics. In addition, we offer double modules over twenty weeks, providing a more in-depth exploration of key areas of practice. This is a flexible course and you can combine modules in different formats to meet your specific learning needs.

    -Flexibility and choice in counselling
-The course offers a range of possibilities which can be negotiated after you start, rather than having to be decided right at the beginning.

You can take a postgraduate certificate on its own, either in Supervision or in Counselling in Primary Care. Or you can take a combination of any 5 modules including Research Methods, to gain a postgraduate diploma in Counselling Studies. The final step would include completing the dissertation, which would meet the requirements of a full Masters.

    Double Modules (PgCert)

-Counselling in Primary Care: This double module will help you reflect on and explore organisational issues and professional practice in the context of primary care and other health settings.
-Supervision: With the growth of counselling and psychotherapy in the UK and their developing professionalisation, there is also a growth in demand for qualified supervisors. This double module is designed to meet these needs.
    -Single Modules
-Counselling Children and Young People: Equips you to work more effectively in counselling children and young people.
-Research Methods: Helps you develop a rigorous approach to the process of research and prepares you to complete a dissertation/ research project
-Post Trauma Stress: Explores the issues related to trauma and post-traumatic stress using a range of therapeutic approaches
-Brief Therapies: Examines the current trends in Brief Therapy and their place in the development of psychotherapy.
-Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Explores the theory and practice of cognitive-behaviour therapy with a range of client groups and presenting issues

    Counselling Research

The aim of undertaking the dissertation is to provide you with an experience of the methods of rigorous scientific enquiry in the context of your own professional practice. On completion of the dissertation, you will be able to:

-Identify a problem which is appropriate for investigation
-Design a research study within the context of current knowledge
-Plan and conduct a rigorous research study which leads to the acquisition of new knowledge
-Present a clear and concise report of a research study

You will be allocated a supervisor with appropriate experience in supervision and expertise in the area of study. They will meet with you on a regular basis, but these meetings will gradually become less frequent as you gain increasing expertise and confidence.

In addition, group seminars are offered to enable you to share experiences, ideas and difficulties. You will be encouraged to choose your own area of study and to develop your research protocol in dialogue with the co-ordinating tutors.
