  • Objectives
    UWE is recognised as one of the leading centres for education in environmental sciences. The programme is based on a strong interdisciplinary and applied focus and our established links to industry, national and local government and agencies and professional accrediting bodies (Institute of Environmental Sciences, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health). It is accredited by the IES (Institution of Environmental Sciences) and develops the business and advanced technical skills required of environmental consultants. The programme is available as a full-time or part-time route. The part-time route is suitable for students in full-time employment who can attend on a day release or a block release basis. Much of the course is undertaken as workplace based learning so it is especially suitable for those in employment. Distance Learning is not offered on this programme.

    Applicants normally have one of the following: -an honours degree awarded by a UK institute of higher education of at least lower second classification, in a relevant subject, with significant technical content. -qualifications and professional practice experience deemed equivalent.

    All students study the core modules:

    -Environmental Business Skills
    -Advanced Topics in Environmental Sciences
    -Professional Practice in Environmental Sciences
    -Project
    -Specialist subjects offered include:

    Environmental Modelling; IPPC Practice; Waste Management; Noise and Nuisances; Environmental and Health Impact Assessment; Risk and Hazard Assessment; Ecology and Land Management; Environmental Audit; Biotechnology; Contaminated Land Evaluation and Remediation; Pollution Management; Air Pollution; Air Quality Assessment and Management; Waste Water Management; Water Pollution; Sustainable Technologies and Development; Environmental Management Systems; Industrial Health and Safety. These are options within the Advanced Topics Module, students elect to study three advanced topics.

    A research project is undertaken for the MSc. Part-time students perform the research project over two terms of the second year in their own workplace. Full-time students carry out the project under the supervision of specialist subject tutors whether at the University or on placement.

    Placements
    Professional Practice in Environmental Sciences is a workplace based placement undertaking a short term environmental consultancy project.

    Assessment
    Modules are assessed using seminars, vivas, oral presentations and coursework. Coursework may be in the form of a case study, study pack, poster, portfolios and reports.
