    This new MSc Psychology launched in January 2008 is an exciting and intensive postgraduate programme which has been designed as a conversion course in Psychology for students with an honours degree in any other subject.

    Building on the successes of our long-established conversion courses, both the new postgraduate certificate and the Masters programme have been developed to meet the requirements of the British Psychological Society's (BPS) Graduate Basis for Recognition, an essential requirement for students who wish to acquire Chartered Status as a Psychologist within the UK.

    The programme is also suited to the demands of an increasing number of international students from all over the world who wish to pursue an interest in Psychology in a UK university and gain an internationally recognised postgraduate qualification.

    Course Content

    Six 10 credit modules in the core domains of Psychology:

        * History and Concepts of Psychology
        * Social Psychology
        * Cognitive Psychology
        * Biological Psychology
        * Developmental Psychology
        * Individual Differences


    Three 20 credit modules:

        * Research Methods
        * Practical Portfolio
        * Postgraduate Diploma Project
        * Masters Project

    Successful completion of these 120 credits leads to the award of the Postgraduate Certificate (PgC) in Psychology.

    Students who wish to complete the MSc will additionally complete a major research project (60 credits), supervised by an individual member of the Psychology staff.

    Teaching and Assessment

    Teaching is by lectures, seminars and workshops.

    Assessment is through a combination of examination and coursework, including essays, reports and seminar presentations.

    Career Opportunities

    Graduates of this programme will, therefore, be qualified to enter accredited postgraduate programmes in specialist areas such as clinical, counselling, health, work, occupational, and forensic psychology, clinical neuropsychology, applied criminology, and sports and exercise psychology.

    In addition, there are strong demands from other professional disciplines, such as medicine, policing and education, for psychologists. Additionally, in the course of the programme, students acquire IT and presentational skills as well as advanced research skills which can be applied in a broad range of employment contexts including business, teaching, marketing and human resources.

    On completion you will be eligible for Graduate Membership of the British Psychological Society. You will have the graduate basis for registration that will enable you to enter further postgraduate training towards becoming a professional psychologist.

    As a student of the School of Business, Law and Psychology, you will have access to some of the best learning support facilities in the higher education sector.

    Our libraries provide computers, printing, photocopying, and inter-library loans. Sunderland also has an extensive electronic library collection, which means you can access much of the information you need online.

    You will also benefit from access to 500 computer workstations of the David Goldman Informatics Centre which offers the latest software packages - open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
