  • Objectives
    The MSc in Social Research Methods provides lessons in the practical application and critical analysis of research methods. It is a research training course for social scientists and those in related disciplines. The central influence on course design has been the perceived needs of humanities and social science researchers. We have sought to design a programme that allows you to develop your research skills in qualitative and quantitative investigative techniques and analysis as well as the wider skills essential to the successful researcher – how to present your work, collaborate with others and apply ethical standards to what you do.

    You will study the following core units:

    -Research design and data collection
    -Research skills for social scientists
    -Data analysis for social scientists

    You will also have a choice of following optional units:

    -Debates in human geography
    -Researching contemporary sociology and social theory: themes and issues
    -Statistics for historians
    -The criminal justice process
    -Policy making in the European Union
    -EU: institutions and theory
    -Governing Europe
    -European integration: from the cold war to post Maastricht
    -External relations of the European Union
    -Nationalism, ethnicity and citizenship in Europe
    -Security politics in the new Europe
    -Applied econometrics and forecasting
    -Time series analysis and financial forecasting
    -Geographical data analysis

    Exit awards
    Each unit taken represents a number of credits. You can graduate with the following awards depending on the number of credits gained:
