Objectives
The Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery aims to enable experienced midwives to deliver, develop and direct high-quality midwifery services in a changing healthcare context. Throughout the programme, you will be encouraged to: further develop your knowledge of physiological, psychological, cultural, social and epidemiological aspects of midwifery practice in order to critically evaluate care provided to childbearing women with complications of pregnancy or in childbirth; study in-depth the art and science of midwifery to enhance inter-professional debate, thereby advancing midwifery practice; consolidate and extend existing knowledge of issues pertaining to the role of teachers of health care professionals; consider critically and investigate social policy, economic influences and professional issues and tensions in the education of nurses, midwives and other health care professionals; and be prepared for the role of lecturer in the higher education environment or the practice educator in the practice environment, and be able to disseminate your knowledge to benefit students in health care settings.

Entry requirements
Course-specific entry requirements You should be a practising midwife in the UK with a minimum of two years’ full-time experience at the point of commencement of the course. If you are a midwife from overseas, you must be eligible for temporary registration with the NMC in the UK.

Course Content
During the autumn and spring semesters, you will be required to take four compulsory modules in:
-Research in Midwifery
-Advancing Midwifery Practice
-Professional Accountability
-Change and Innovation
You will also be able to choose one optional module from an approved list. Modules currently on offer include:
-Education Studies for Health Care Practitioners
-Counselling Skills in Midwifery
-Breast Feeding
-Effective Supervision of Midwives
Other optional modules may be added from time to time according to demand from our NHS partners.

Course Structure
The Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery is taught on a full-time basis over nine months or part-time over 18 months.
The course occurs in the autumn and spring semesters, during which you will be required to undertake four compulsory modules worth 90 credits and one optional module worth 30 credits.
The Academic Division of Midwifery offers the course at the Derby Centre. Some of the optional modules may be available at the Nottingham Centre.
Teaching methods and facilities used can include: enquiry-based learning, formal lectures, demonstrations and skills workshops, discussion groups, seminars, tutorials, computer assisted learning and portfolio learning.
We also offer an MSc in Midwifery, which includes the same taught components as the Postgraduate Diploma but also has a 60-credit dissertation requirement
