  • Course description
The programme will be delivered on CD-Rom and makes extensive use of the world-wide web, so you will need reliable internet access and the ICT skills necessary to access the course materials. There are two compulsory attendance-based courses, each of three day’s duration.

The study rate is flexible but you must complete the programme within two years. You are supported in your study route through the programme by a University tutor who will take account of your prior knowledge and experience to assess your initial needs.

You will receive training in the teaching of the primary school National Curriculum subjects and in teaching and learning.

The Government requires PGCE students to spend the equivalent of eighteen weeks in school. Block placements are of 4 and 8 weeks duration with the remainder of the eighteen weeks being made up of serial visit days. You are expected to be in school full-time for the two block periods. Block placements are undertaken within the School of Education’s partnership that encompasses Hertfordshire and Local Education Authorities in Barnet, Bedfordshire, Brent, Buckinghamshire, Camden, Ealing, Enfield, Essex, Harrow, Hillingdon, Luton, Milton Keynes and South Lincolnshire. If you do not live within daily travelling distance, you will need to make arrangements to do so during block placements.

Placements enable you to work alongside and learn from experienced teachers. Your level of responsibility for teaching the class increases steadily as you gain experience, and by the end of your final placement you will be taking on the full role of the teacher.

The award of the PGCE is based on your performance in schools during teaching placements, passing the formally assessed written assignments and the submission of an Initial Teacher Education Profile (ITEP) which is maintained throughout the programme and provides evidence of meeting the DfES standards required to gain Qualified Teacher Status. The ITEP contains a range of documentary evidence drawn from school and campus based elements of the programme.
