In recent years, the world has changed beyond recognition. The study of international issues has become more complex, and yet at the same time more interesting and necessary. The end of the Cold War has changed the international system, but national security still remains at the core of international politics.

This course provides foundation training in strategic studie and contemporary issues in international security. It provides a background in the history of strategic thought, theories of nuclear deterrence, nuclear strategy and arms control. Different explanatory approaches to the Cold War are explored, the major issues in contemporary international security are analysed in depth, including the problems of the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, ballistic missiles in the Third World, regional conflicts and collective security in Europe.
