    Accountancy is the process of maintaining and processing financial information to help managers, investors, tax authorities and other decision makers allocate resources. External auditors provide an independent examination of an organisation’s financial statements to ensure that they accurately represent the client’s operations and position. Internal auditors assess how well managers control business risk and the processes and controls underlying financial and other reporting. Upon completion of this degree, students graduate with strong knowledge and skills in accounting and assurance services.

    At the end of the first year, successful students may switch to the second year of the BA Hons Accounting and Finance or the BA Hons Accounting and Financial Information Systems degrees. After the second year, students may spend a ‘sandwich’ year on an industrial placement.

    Professional recognition

    Upon completion of the degree, with the relevant options, students are exempt from eight out of the nine foundation-level examinations of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Significant exemptions are also granted from the exams of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and the Association of International Accountants (AIA). Exemptions from the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS) and other bodies are also available by individual application

    Employment in accounting and finance departments, the financial services sector, the public sector and non-profit-making organisations, and in public practice with firms of certified or chartered accountants
