Art Gallery and Museum Studies (AGMS) has been taught at the University of Manchester for more than 30 years. Today, the AGMS programme is continually being reviewed and developed in response to new research, emerging critical approaches and shifts in museum practice. Manchester's traditional focus on the art gallery remains, but is now complemented by courses that address history, theory and practice in a range of institutions. The programme is shaped by the rich and diverse ecology of museums in the city and the North West, which makes Manchester such an attractive place for museum studies.
Progression and assessment
In semester one, the programme comprises the AGMS specific research training course (Museums, Museology and Museographies) and the research training unit SAGE (Skills Awareness for Graduate Education) and the core course The Museum and its Contexts. In semester two, you choose two optional course units which include: Art in the City; Museum Objects and Exhibitions; Science, Nature, Museums; Museums of Conflict and Conscience; Digital Heritage; Museum Policy and Practice;Gallery Learning and Interpretation. Throughout the year, you undertake extensive project work and a work placement in a museum or gallery. Assessment for the AGMS specific research training course is by fieldwork portfolio, completed during semester one. Assessment for the Core Course The Museum and its Contexts is based on one 6,000-word essay. Assessment of the option courses in semester two is by a 5,000-word essay and a project undertaken during the semester. Students undertaking the MA programme must complete a 12,000-15,000-word dissertation. The AGMS programme is validated by the Museums Association
