BA Communications

  • Objectives The media and cultural industries are fundamental to contemporary society. This course will develop your creative, critical and practical skills for employment within these industries combined with study in another subject. Communications studies provides a strong contextual base to your chosen practical work. You can choose to study a range of practical media options throughout the course in addition to film, media and theatre studies. There are many media industry professionals on our staff and you benefit from regular industry guest speakers. The course has special opportunities for practical engagement with communications and media through events such as the annual Big City Film Festival.
  • Entry requirements Typically, we look for at least 160 points at A2 level, or 160200 points from A2 and AS level combined. In addition, five GCSE subjects are required, including grade C in English. We welcome applications from those on recognised Access/Foundation courses, overseas and mature applicants with a range of qualifications and/or experience, as well as part-time students.

  • Course description Course structure

    Joint Honours involves four modules from each of three levels in Communications, plus four from your other subject.

    Level 1

    The first level introduces key media and communications topics including media and film studies, communications theory and cultural history. It prepares you for higher-level study, including the study skills needed in higher education.

    Level 2

    This level covers analysis of media and communications with ethical media issues. It increasingly addresses employability, professional and creative practice. You will produce your own analysis of contemporary media, innovative research in cultural history and your own media products. Practical options include radio production, journalism, screenwriting, communications, and film.

    Level 3

    The final level allows you to develop the skills and knowledge in the analysis and production of media texts. You can gain work experience in the media and communications industries and carry out independent research and problem-solving in a final project. You can develop upon the contextual and/or practice-based modules.
