BA English and History

Objectives
English and History is a traditional combination of academically rigorous subjects, taught at Huddersfield by two innovative teams of academic staff, who also recognise the need for preparation for subsequent careers. There is a unique compulsory work placement at intermediate level. You take equal amounts of English and History modules. In History you can study a wide geographical and chronological range; in English you follow either the Language or Literature route, to ensure the acquisition of a real depth of knowledge and theoretical skills

Entry requirements
Entry Requirements Normally 12 units to include a B in A level History or English and an overall score of 280 points. We welcome mature applicants without standard entry requirements but with acceptable evidence of their suitability for the course. We positively encourage such applications.We arrange three Open Days and weekly interviews for prospective students throughout the year.

Course Structure
Foundation Level
In English students choose to follow either a Language or a Literature route, each with a compulsory programme to develop skills and knowledge for subsequent years. In Language students take three modules including Introduction to Describing English, Introduction to Stylistics and English in Context. In Literature you will take Approaches to Literature, Introduction to Narritive, and Poetry and Drama.
In History, you will take History Study Skills and a two modules from medieval history, twentieth-century British history, modern European and world history, and an introduction the history of ideas.
Intermediate Level
In History you take either the History of Early Modern England or Nineteenth-Century Britain and the six week work placement. In English, Language you must take Sociolinguistics, as well as choices from other modules, including Child Language Acquisition, Stylistics of Drama, Stylistics of Contemporary Poetry, Stylistics of Narritive and Conversation Analysis. In Literature you take Introduction to Critical and Cultural Theory and other literature modules such as 20th Century Fiction, English Literature 1580-1700, Victorian Issues, English Literature of the 18th Century.
Honours level
In English you continue to develop skills and knowledge in either Language or Literature with modules which may include Language and Power, Metaphor, Language of Humour, Pragmatics and Bilingualism on the anguage route and British Romanticism, The Rise of the Novel, Women's Writing and Feminist Literary Theory, City Narritives, Renaissance Drama on the lIterature route.
In History you specialise, taking special subjects related to the research of the History staff. Modules can include Britain on the Breadline between the Wars, the French Revolution, Slavery and American Society and Gender and Society in the Middle Ages.
