ObjectivesAt the University of Leicester you have the unique opportunity to study film, which constitutes the core of the course, in the context of a degree in which you also take modules in the history of art. The course offers an exciting and wide-ranging interdisciplinary approach, exploring the history and theory of film and art, including critical examination of key themes, formal and textual analysis and the investigation of social, historical and aesthetical contexts. Students are able to draw upon the teaching and research expertise, and friendly atmosphere, of the Department of History of Art and Film, but also of the School of Modern Languages, the Centre for American Studies and the Department of Media and Communications.
Entry requirementsEntry Requirements * A/AS Levels: Three A levels. Two AS levels considered in place of one A level. General Studies not accepted. * GCSE: No specific requirements. * Access to HE course: Pass, with at least the requisite credits at level 3. * European Baccalaureate: Pass with 65% overall. * International Baccalaureate: Pass Diploma with 30 points. * Leicestershire Progression Accord: 230-310 points as above plus full Accord credits. * Other Qualifications: Other national and international qualifications welcomed. * Mature students welcomed: Alternative qualifications considered. * Second Year Entry: Possible for those with advanced qualifications compatible with our degree structure. * Interviews not normally required. * All applicants receiving an offer will be invited to visit the Department. * It is also possible to study for this degree on a part-time basis.

Programme
First Year
During the first semester you will take two film modules, Introduction to Reading Film and Introduction to Cinema. You will also take a supplementary module, chosen from a variety of fields such as American Studies, History of Art, Practical Art (taught in the studios of the Richard Attenborough Centre), English, Modern Languages or Politics.
In semester two you will take a further module, Realism and the Cinema, allowing you to explore one topic in greater depth. You will also select one History of Art module, plus another module in a supplementary subject.
Second Year
In semester one you will take two core modules - American Film and Visual Culture, and Film Production, the latter giving you practical filmmaking experience. You will also make a selection from a range of Film Studies or History of Art options, currently including Film Journalism, European Art 1890-1940, Documents of the History of Art, and From Drawing to Painting in the Italian Renaissance as well as options from National cinemas (currently Mexican and French cinema). In 2008 a new optional module on the practice of film and media archiving will be introduced, drawing on the resources of the Media Archive of Central England (MACE) which has recently moved to the University of Leicester.
In semester two you will take a core module in Researching World Cinemas and complete a 5,000 word Long Essay. You will also make a selection from modules on National cinemas (currently Spanish and Italian).
Third Year
All students will complete a 10,000 word Dissertation. In addition you will take four specialist options from a list which currently includes the following:
