Objectives
History as an academic subject is not about compiling facts. It is about interpreting past human experience in all of its tremendous diversity. Historians disagree with each other in the interpretations and explanations of history, so studying it is both stimulating and challenging.

Year 1
You take a total of four 30 credit Level 1 modules: three History modules plus a fourth module in History or one in another subject area: Criminology, English, Film Studies, French, International Relations, Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Politics, Psychology, Sociology, or Spanish.
Years 2 and 3
You take four 30 credit modules each year. You may specialise completely and take all eight modules in History, or vary your studies by taking one or two modules in other subjects. However, as a minimum, you must take six modules in History including a compulsory module, The Theory and Practice of History (Year 2), the Dissertation module and a special subject module in which you study History in depth and which is linked to your dissertation (Year 3).

From the Renaissance to the Enlightenment: Themes in Early Modern History, 1480-1780; Britain and the Long Eighteenth Century, 1688-1832; The Century of the Superpowers: The United States, Russia and Europe, 1890-1991; Britain and the World in the Twentieth Century; Europe in the Revolutionary Age, 1789-1871.
