BA Languages and Contemporary Cultures

  • Objectives Our degrees give you the opportunity to combine your interest in foreign languages with a strong professional orientation. You will gain insights into languages and their varied socio-cultural contexts, and develop the skills needed in a world of growing globalisation. We put great emphasis on using the language and provide you with the study skills that enable you to become an independent language learner. You will be working with the latest applied technology in language learning and translation. You will have the opportunity to spend a year abroad on a work or study placement in Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Spain or Russia. We are also developing increasing links with Latin America.
  • Entry requirements Typical entry requirements A level grades BBB (300 points) Grade B in the appropriate language at A level or equivalent is required for programmes incorporating French, German or Spanish. Please contact us for the requirements for ab initio Spanish or Russian.

    Introduction to Language Study and Introduction to the Cultures and Societies (of chosen languages)
    History and Politics (of countries concerned)
    Introduction to Translation and Interpreting Studies
    Intralingual Audiovisual Translation
    Intensive Language Learning (for ab initio languages)

    Level 2   

    Languages for Intercultural Communication
    Translation (into and out of chosen languages)
    Detailed Analysis and Advanced Oral Work
    Languages in Education and Institutions (of countries concerned)
    Political Systems and Social and Political Discourse
    Introduction to Computer-assisted Translation
    Introduction to Interlingual Audiovisual Translation and Translation Quality Assurance

    Professional training year

    Level 3

    Dissertation and Viva (in main language)
    Advanced Translation Strategies
