BEng Embedded Systems

  • Objectives It is estimated that for every processor chip sold for use in a desktop PC, around 100 embedded processors are sold. These processors are used everywhere, from cars, aircraft, factories and medical equipment right through to MP3 players and microwave ovens. Our Embedded Systems Engineering course covers the development of embedded systems in depth, and we find that graduates with skills in this area are in very high demand.

    Programme

    First Year

Provides a solid foundation in software engineering and electronics. Subjects include: Electrical, Electronic and Software Engineering subjects including: Circuits and Systems; Program Design; Electronics; Communications; Software Engineering and Professional Practice; Numerical Methods; Signals and Systems; Electromagnetism; Design and CAD and Mathematics. Practical and workshop activities complement the lectures.

    Second Year

You will study Process-Oriented Programming; Control; Logic and Discrete Structures; Mathematics; Electronics; Algorithms and Data Structures; Information Systems and Embedded Systems. You will take part in a challenging ‘design and build’ project, in which you will contribute your software engineering skills within a small, multidisciplinary design team. These projects involve all stages of realistic, real-world, activity from analysis of the client’s requirements to design and implementation of the finished product. Previous projects include multi-task robotic vehicles and an automated CD selector/loader.

    Third Year

In your final year you will study Digital Control and Instrumentation; Electronics; Software Engineering and System Development; undertake a major design project and take a number of options from a wide range which currently includes: Management; Communications; Radio Systems; Power Electronics; State Variable Control; Networks and Distributed Computer Systems; Compression Methods for Multimedia, Cryptography and Internet Security, and Web Technologies.
