  • Course description Introduction

The PGCE for secondary school teachers (11-18 years) leads to Qualified Teacher Status required to teach in a school. It complies with standards determined by the Department for Education and Skills. It also provides sufficient knowledge and expertise to teach pupils of all abilities in your specialist area.

During the course you will complete the science PGCE and study biology, chemistry and physics to prepare you for teaching science at Key Stages 3 and 4. You will also study aspects of your specialism at post-16 level. At the end of the course, you will be able to teach science across Key Stage 3, and your specialism to Key Stage 4 and advanced level.

You will have an opportunity to extend your knowledge across all three areas of science following a variety of teaching methods, including lectures, seminars, practical and student-led activities. You will also have two teaching placements, which provide the opportunity to observe and assist teachers initially and then to teach lessons to all age groups.

You will also learn how ICT can support work in science and in individual professional development.

To meet all the required standards you will be assessed through a variety of activities including teaching practice, presentations and producing teaching packages.

You will receive close guidance and support throughout the course. Science teachers need to be enthusiastic and committed. We aim to help you meet the challenge of science teaching today.

    Teaching and Assessment

Continuous assessment is via coursework, subject assignments, ICT portfolio, periodic reports and production of evidence to support your completion of all the Qualifying to Teach Standards. Secondary school placements provide an opportunity to become involved with various aspects of school life, whether pastoral, social or academic.

    School Placements

The course features extensive school placements throughout the region. We arrange two secondary school placements with visits to linked primary schools.

    Career Opportunities

Many students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all subject areas offered according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
