Biomedicine (Graduate Certificate - Graduate Diploma)

  • Objectives If you have already studied biology and wish to update your understanding of biomedicine – either to progress in your career, or prior to applying for a postgraduate qualification in biomedicine, or simply to keep abreast of the latest advances in the subject – then you will be interested in this Graduate Certificate/Graduate Diploma. In this programme, you will receive: training in numerical, literary and computer-based skills; training and practice in scientific skills; and an introduction to key concepts in biomedicine.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Knowledge of biology or related areas to degree level or equivalent. Relevant work experience useful.

  • Course description You choose modules from those listed below, in discussion with the programme director, to the value of 60 credits for the Graduate Certificate and 120 credits for the Graduate Diploma. Some modules are only available in alternate years.

    -Applied Biochemistry
    -Aspects of Bacterial Disease
    -Cell Signalling
    -Essentials of Genetics
    -Human and Evolutionary Genetics
    -The Immune System and Disease
    -Introduction to Microbiology
    -Physiology of Excitable Cells
    -Plants and Humans
    -Vertebrate Reproduction.

    Module worth 30 credits:

    -Cellular Metabolism.

    Teaching
    A combination of lectures, seminars, practical classes, individual study and computer-based learning. 

    Assessment
    A mixture of continuous assessment and unseen written examinations held in May/June. Assessed coursework may include practical reports, problem-solving, data analysis, essays and presentations.
