BSc Midwifery

  • Objectives Midwifery care in the UK is shared between different members of the health care team. Midwives have a specific responsibility to ensure that the care offered to childbearing women during a critical period in their lives meets the standard of safety required, and to act as advocates for mothers and families.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Students who do not meet the minimum academic entry requirements but have significant life and/or work experience will be considered on an individual basis, but should have evidence of recent study in a science/health related subject area recognised as equivalent academic level by Academic Board.
  • Academic title BSc Midwifery
  • Course description Content

Midwives face major challenges which include meeting government targets for developing women-centred services. The programme is designed to produce professional practitioners able to provide, and assume responsibility for, quality midwifery care.

The programme is delivered in a multidisciplinary environment so that midwifery students benefit from studying alongside students from other health care disciplines in the School.

The main emphasis during the course is the exploration of all aspects of low and high risk midwifery care, and this is reflected in the core modules undertaken in each year. In addition, you will also explore issues such as interprofessional working, sociology, psychology, biology, gynaecology care, medical complications, health promotion, research and management and have the opportunity to take one module in either complementary therapies, childbirth education or breastfeeding. Most of this time you will be working in clinical placements which link theory with practice and will be exposed to problem solving, judgement and decision making in preparation for your role as a practising midwife.
