  • Academic title Child Protection, PGCert
  • Course description The protection of children and adolescents is dependent on co-operation between different agencies and professionals; sensitive work with parents and carers in the best interest of the child; and the careful exercise of professional judgement, based on a thorough assessment and critical analysis of the available information (Department of Health, 1999).

The programme will be of particular interest to graduates who wish to make a significant contribution to the welfare of children in need (and in need of protection) and their families. It is designed for professionals who wish to advance their skills and operate at a strategic level within the context of multi-professional and multi-agency working. It will facilitate a critical understanding of the student’s own role and responsibility and those of others in all aspects of child protection work.

The programme gives a deeper understanding of child protection issues, enabling the student to take a strategic lead in local inter-agency working in child protection matters. Because of its inter-professional nature, applications are invited from a range of professionals, including police officers, teachers, medical practitioners, probation service workers, voluntary agencies, nurses (school nurses, community psychiatric nurses, learning disability nurses, children's nurses, practice nurses), midwives, health visitors and social workers.
