Course - Classical Greece and the origins of Western Art

  • Course description What is the course about?

    An examination of the principal art works created in Greek world from the ‘Dark Ages’ to the death of Alexander the Great. Art used as precious gifts between men, from men to gods and as offerings to the dead. Greek views on sex and gender, how and why these were exemplified in their creations. Beautiful images on vases provide a social commentary on the issues of the day. Religious and philosophical ideas provide a key to understanding those lovely creations. Greek views on art making and the status of the artist. This competitively produced art celebrates its own craftsmanship.

    What topics will we cover?

    The relationship between Greek art and ideas on politics. Myth, religion, philosophy, sexuality and death.
    The course will include visits to the British Museum.

    By the end of this course you should be able to:

    - Have gained a critical understanding of the art, archaeology and ancient texts of this period.
    - Have gained knowledge and understanding of the issues and debates relating to Ancient Greek art.
    - Be able to think critically and independently about what you have seen and read.

    What level is the course?


    No previous knowledge of the subject is expected. But any students with prior knowledge of Classical Greece will find it enhances their understanding.

    How will I be taught?

    Illustrated lectures using slides. Discussions, readings and analysis of original texts (in translation) in the form of handouts. Discussions and questions.

    Are there any other costs (e.g. certification, materials, equipment or books I need to buy)?

    No. A book list for optional reading will be supplied at the start of the course.

    What feedback will I get?


    You will receive regular feedback from your tutor throughout the course, as and when appropriate. At the end of the course you and your tutor are asked to assess the progress you have made.
