Design Management (MA)

  • Entry requirements tandard Entry Applicants will normally be expected to have a good honours degree. This does not have to be in design but, applicants should have experience in a relevant industry or be able to demonstrate a link between their current job/experience and design. This refers to design in the broadest sense so can include organisational design, systems design and service design as well as more traditional design disciplines such as product, fashion and graphics. Mature applicants with a lower qualification and at least 3 years appropriate professional experience may be accepted. Applicants with substantial relevant experience alone will be considered on their individual merit. Applicants will be expected to be computer literate and should be familiar with the use of internet applications. Additional Notes Candidates whose first language is not English must pass an English proficiency test, eg TOEFL with a score of 575 (paper based), 230 (computer-based) or IELTS score of 7.0

  • Course description COURSE INFORMATION
    MA Design Management offers a unique insight into the value of design and innovation to organisations and how this can best be managed.

    MA Design is an ideal course for designers and design graduates who want to develop their career by taking on a more strategic, managerial role. It will also appeal to graduates or managers from other sectors, who want to advance their careers by developing a greater understanding of the value of design and innovation and how to harness its power within a corporate context.

    Consequently, this course attracts a wide variety of people including;
    Design Practitioners
    R&D Managers
    Business Graduates
    Public Sector Managers
    Operational Managers
    Marketing Managers.

    There are a total of 180 credits in this degree. Eighty of these are theory based and cover essential elements such as;

    - Creative Thinking and Intellectual Property (20 credits)
    - Cross Cultural Communications (10 credits)
    - Research Principles (10 credits)
    - Reflective Practice (10 credits)
    - Contemporary Influences (10 credits) - Commercialisation (including brand/marketing communications) (20 credits)

    These contextual modules provide the perfect foundation for the remainder of the degree which can be tailored to respond to your specialist interest area within the Design Management field. This part of your degree equates to 100 credits and includes;

    - Design Value - managing the design process (20 credits)
    - Global Strategies and Project Management (20 credits)
    - Final Project ie written dissertation (60 credits)


    COURSEWORK AND ASSESSMENT
    Students are required to;
    # Demonstrate their capabilities on an ongoing basis. This is representative of their professional and academic character and personal foundation for the objectives defined in the students' learning contract.
    # Formulate a proposal for independent study focusing on a learning contract with specific objectives.


    Monitoring and review processes ensure that all proposals offer and deliver demanding programmes to the level and complexity appropriate for postgraduate study.

    This campus-based course commences in September and runs over two calendar years. Applications must be received by the end of July at the latest.
