  • Course description Introduction
The one-year PGCE for secondary school teachers in design technology leads to Qualified Teacher Status for teachers of 11-16 year olds in line with standards determined by the Department of Education and Skills. It provides sufficient knowledge and expertise in your specialist area to teach pupils of all abilities in your chosen age range.

Design technology is well established in the curriculum of every secondary school and is both exciting and rewarding to teach. To deliver a high quality design and technological education it is necessary for design technology teachers to work as part of a school-based technology team. You will be given the opportunity to teach using a broad range of materials and technologies.

You will study the most recent educational developments and develop the many skills necessary to teach pupils in your chosen age range. The courses focus on the areas of resistant materials, systems and control and graphics and draws students from these and many other design related areas.

    Teaching and Assessment
Assessment is continuous via coursework, subject assignments, ICT portfolios, periodic reports, teaching portfolios and the gathering of evidence to support completion of all the Qualifying to Teach Standards.

    School Placements
The course features extensive school placements within the region. Two secondary school placements with visits to linked primary schools are arranged during the course. Placements provide an opportunity to become involved with the pastoral, social or academic aspects of school life.

    Career Opportunities
Many students have a wide range of vocational experience, so career prospects are excellent. There was an exceptionally high employment rate across all PGCE subject areas offered according to the University's 2005/06 Destinations Survey. Some subjects achieved a 100 per cent employment rate.
