English for Academics Course

  • Entry requirements English for Academics’ is an advanced, intensive language course for academics who are non-native speakers of English and use English in their professional lives.
  • Course description Institutions may be able to use Erasmus programme "Organisation of Mobility (OM)" grants to fund staff participation in this programme.

    OM funds can be used to support English-language training of those staff at European institutions who are looking to improve their English language prior to undertaking a teaching staff exchange mobility visit and/or looking to improve their English-language in order to more effectively deliver the modules that are delivered at their home institution to incoming Erasmus students.

    The programme offers:

    2 weeks of intensive advanced academic English tuition

    20 hours tuition per week

    Experienced and qualified university language teachers

    Small classes (maximum of 15 per class)

    A programme of cultural visits (1 each week)

    University-based and within a British Council accredited institution

    State of the art Language Resources Centre

    A central location in one of the UK’s premier cities

    What does the course cover?
    Academic Writing:

    Developing vocabulary and grammar for academic writing. 

    Work on key aspects of journal articles: writing abstracts, writing introductions and conclusions, data commentary

    Writing for academic journals / improving academic style/ finding your own style

    Writing in your discipline area: building your expertise

    Individual feedback on participants’ own writing from an Academic English expert.

    Academic Speaking:

    Academic Presentations in English

    the language and structure of presentations

    engaging with your audience

    speaking without notes

    handling questions

    Academic seminars

    asking questions

    small group interactions;

    Pronunciation work

    What level of English do I need?
    We expect participants to be upper-intermediate level or above and using English on a regular basis in their professional lives.
