Film Studies MA

  • Objectives This course focuses on a range of current approaches to film studies and provides an in-depth study of specific areas of cinema such as American Independent, European, British and Far-Eastern cinema. You will look at developments in film history and theory by focusing on specific countries and their emerging cinemas.

  • Course description What will you study?
    You will study all that is new, vital and innovative in contemporary and emergent cinemas. You will evaluate and critically analyse a range of perspectives on cinema in light of contemporary developments, shifting cultural alliances and patterns of crossfertilisations. You will be introduced to the main areas of debate in the history of film criticism. You will also learn the research skills required to conduct independent study such as your dissertation project.

    Research areas
    Many of the staff in the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences are research active. This ensures they are in touch with the latest thinking and bring best practice to your studies.

    Research in film, media and drama aims to:

    -explore the expanding points of intersection between these three areas;
    -examine the new cultural forms that will emerge from them, especially in the field of digital media culture; and
    -create innovative and cross-disciplinary projects from these developments.
