Information Technology (Mobile Communications Technologies) MSc-Diploma-Certificate

  • Objectives The aim of the course is to reflect recent significant advances in mobile communications in the wider context of the rapidly developing digital communications arena. Students will gain competence in the theory and practice of Mobile Digital Technology such that they will be able to design and develop appropriate software/hardware and have an appreciation of more general network planning considerations involved in mobile and wireless communications systems. They will thus be able to take advantage of the undoubted long-term employment prospects in these areas.
  • Academic title Information Technology (Mobile Communications Technologies) MSc/Diploma/Certificate
  • Course description Duration

One year (MSc), 9 months (Diploma), 6 months (Certificate). May also be available part-time over 2 years.

    Overview

Few people will have remained impervious to the explosive growth in digital speech/audio/video and data transmission over the past few years. More recently, the present economic problems in the technological sector notwithstanding, it seems undeniable that the long term future of digital communications will lie more and more in the employment of mobile, as opposed to fixed, terminals.

Students will study three compulsory modules and one optional module in each of the first two terms and then undertake a project during the summer months (incorporating training in Research Methods, Project Planning and Experimental Design). The first optional pair is intended to concentrate on the hardware/engineering aspects of the subject. Nowadays any complex digital communication system has a large amount of non-hardware management/monitoring and control and so the second pair allows specialisation in this area.
