  • Objectives The course develops specialist knowledge and skills in modern communications systems, including networking, modern signal processing and advanced topics in communications. The blend of taught subjects and industrially oriented projects provides you with the necessary, up-to-date knowledge you need to join the fast-moving area of global communications. Networking with commercial and industrial applications is a rapidly expanding area with major skills shortages. The course aims to develop expertise in these areas and to prepare you to adapt to future changes. The University has a long and strong history of communications technology courses and is recognised as a CISCO Regional Academy and these links have benefited the MSc course. Communication networks expansion is continuing not only in technologically advanced countries but also in emerging countries and the developing countries.
  • Entry requirements BEng/BSc first or upper second class degree in a relevant subject such as electronics, communications, mathematics and computing (the latter two with some coverage of communications principles), or industrial experience with proven mathematical skills.

  • Course description Course structure
    The MSc course involves a taught programme of 30 weeks divided into two semesters, commencing in late September and an individual project which is normally completed during the summer. The part-time mode follows a similar pattern over two years, with the flexibility to study for a longer period.

    -Advanced Communications Systems
    -Broadband Networks
    -Signal Processing
    -Communications Technology Research Methods
    -Digital Communications Systems Project

    Optional modules:

    -Embedded Internet Systems
    -Real-time Data Processing
    -Microwave and Optical Communications
    -Mobile and Digital Broadcasting
    -Projects will be industrial-based where possible and may be carried out in industry or within the University. They are assessed by a combination of formal reports and viva.

    Assessment
    For most modules assessment is by a combination of coursework/case study and examination.

    Career opportunities
    Career opportunities are extensive. In industry, graduates of this course are likely to be employed by communications companies, working in a variety of professions such as network design, management, services, maintenance, marketing and sales. In addition, there are opportunities to progress to higher education institutions as instructors or as MPhil/PhD research assistants.
