Objectives MA Fine Art aims to provide students with: * A systematic understanding of knowledge and the current critical arena of debate relevant to their own practice. * Appropriate research skills by which they can create and interpret knowledge relevant to their art practice (to be evidenced through the production of written work and studio output). * The ability to produce work of originality which clearly demonstrates the application of knowledge. This will be evidenced through exhibition. * The ability and confidence to manage all the attendant issues associated with showing work in a public space. * The level of attainment required to make realistic and appropriate registrations for research degrees.
Entry requirements Fine Art honours degree and evidence of study or substantial prior experience or a first degree in another subject. At interview all applicants are required to present a portfolio of recent Fine Art work.

Course description Overview

MFA Fine Art is distinctive in that it offers students a thorough grounding in research methodologies specifically applicable to academic and practice based fine art research.

MFA Fine Art is a taught studio based course that will enable students to produce fine art work that clearly demonstrates an understanding of and critical engagement with issues relevant to an identified area of fine art research.

Students will be expected to commit themselves to an appropriate media area (s) within the broad spectrum of fine art practice. These would include: painting, sculpture, installation, performance, lens media or combinations of these. Choices will be informed by the outcome of research activity and the ambition of the work.

Access to a visiting artists programme, participation in one day and residential study visits; studio spaces and access to workshops and other resources; a programme of integrated critical theory and studio practice; access to a range of fine art staff together with lecturers from other relevant disciplines; access to exhibition space within the school; opportunities to register for units of study outside the MA course, to develop additional skills and experience.

Teaching is through a seminar, tutorial and lecture programme.

Key Features

Assessment

The culmination of the programme is a final exhibition of the students own work supported and elaborated by dissertation. Students will also have the option to submit a larger written component as part of the final exhibition.
