Master Financial Markets with Information Systems

  • Objectives The course aims to provide advanced instruction and training in financial markets and instruments, financial engineering, and in the techniques and methodologies of information systems design and prototyping. The taught modules provide in-depth knowledge of the theoretical and applied aspects of the subject matter. The dissertation introduces participants to alternative research strategies and methodological issues, and provides training in the management and reporting of a research project in the area of finance and the relevant computing application.
  • Entry requirements The normal requirement is at least a lower second Honours degree or equivalent in computing, computer science or related subject, economics, engineering, finance, management science, mathematics, science, or statistics. Those with substantial relevant professional experience will also be considered. Exemptions from specific modules will be considered. Those without the standard requirements can attend the Graduate Diploma course prior to enrolling on this course.

    Core modules (all modules listed must be taken):

    -Financial Derivatives
    -Structured Projects
    -Object Oriented Analysis and Design
    -Quantitative Research Methods for Finance
    -Relational Database Design
    -Risk Hedging and Financial Instruments

    There are no optional modules.

    You must also undertake a dissertation of between 10,000 and 20,000 words.

    Assessment
    A variety of assessment methods are used including traditional unseen examinations, open book computer workshops, essays, written reports, in-class tests and case study presentations.

    Career opportunities
    The course will be particularly useful to recent graduates seeking careers in, or already employed in, the design and specification of information systems as applied to derivatives trading, finance, financial risk management, and treasury departments of national and international corporations. Existing systems designers who wish to move further towards activity in the financial markets will also find the course of interest.

    Attendance & duration

    Full-time: 1 year, 3 evenings a week
    Part-time (eve): 2-4 years, up to 2 evenings a week
