ObjectivesThe course provides a multidisciplinary learning environment in which to study health and social care services management. The overall aim is to develop effective managers: people who are able to engage with policy, clarify strategic goals, implement, manage and monitor good practice, and manage themselves and others in the pursuit of excellence in a multidisciplinary context. It begins by enabling you to be analytical of your own and others' behaviour in relation to management processes, focusing on your capacity to manage your own time, priorities and development, as well as the performance of others. You will be provided with learning opportunities, which examine areas such as strategy development, the management of change and risk management. You will examine methods to evaluate performance, quality and risk, and will be offered a structured set of options to review management issues that are specific to the policy areas of your own service, including healthcare, social welfare, community care, and children and families.
Entry requirementsNormally a good Honours degree plus three years' management experience. Experienced clinical staff or senior practitioners moving into a management role will also be considered. Those seeking an Advanced Award in Social Work (AASW) must also hold a social work qualification.

Course descriptionCourse structure
You are expected to complete four core modules, two options from a list, and a triple-module project.
Core modules:
-Measuring and Managing Performance
-Managing Self and Others
-Public Services: Policy and Strategy
-Social Research: Principles and Practice
One option should come from the policy area (health, mental health, social policy, community care, or family policy), and the other will be in management.
Dissertation
Concepts, skills and theory covered in the course are integrated through a 15,000-word dissertation evaluating the management or implementation of a particular policy in your own workplace.
Assessment
Assessment involves coursework, reports and management exercises.

Attendance & duration
Full-time: one year, three evenings or equivalent per week
Part-time (day and eve): two or more years, two evenings or equivalent per week plus one short daytime course either in January or September
