  • Entry requirements Applicants should normally have, or expect to obtain, an upper second class Honours Degree in an appropriate subject, or equivalent qualification. Participants whose first language is not English must also have an IELTS score of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component, or TOEFL 600 (250 computer-based, at least 100 Internet-based, with a minimum banding of 20 for Writing, Listening and Reading, and 22 for Speaking), or equivalent.

  • Course description This programme is a collaborative research degree with an interdisciplinary focus, jointly taught by specialists in history, politics and culture in the Department of French Studies in the University of Birmingham, and Aston University's School of Languages & Social Sciences (French Academic Subject Group).

    Outline of programme

    The programme comprises taught modules and an extended dissertation.

    Modules:

        * Citizenship and Political Culture in Postwar France
        * Self, Society and Identity in 19th-Century France: Fiction and Film
        * Conflict and Culture: Fiction and Film
        * Research Skills Module.

    The extended Dissertation is based on supervised study and research on a chosen topic.

    Assessment

    The taught modules are assessed by written examination or extended essay. The taught element of the programme is complemented by a 20,000 word extended dissertation leading to the award of the MA.
