  • Objectives This well-established and highly successful course is designed to provide a career boost for the experienced teacher or lecturer in EFL. Studying with a cosmopolitan and diverse group of students from all parts of the world, you will develop a critical understanding of the cultural, political, institutional and sociolinguistic context within which the English language is used, taught and learned today. Recent graduates have gone on to senior positions in schools and universities worldwide, as well as to policy-making roles in government and PhD-level study. The course runs in parallel with the MA Teaching English as a Foreign Language, offering some common and some independent modules, but is designed for the experienced teacher.

  • Course description Course structure
    You will take a total of nine modules or equivalent, as follows:

    -The Sociolinguistics of English in a Multilingual World
    -Intercultural Perspectives on Academic Writing and Research
    -Linguistics and Language Teaching: the Description of Language and its Applications
    -Looking Beyond the Classroom: a Critical View of Language and Language Learning
    -Managing Change in ELT: a Global Perspective

    Options (select one only):

    -The Classroom as Context
    -Materials Design: a Multimedia Approach
    -Young Learners
    -ESOL and the World City
    -Dissertation (3 modules equivalent)

    Assessment
    A variety of methods are used, including seminar presentations, reports, essays and a dissertation.

    Career opportunities
    This course will give you a key advantage in the ever-growing world market for teachers of English, and enable you to contemplate moving to senior, managerial or academic positions. Progression to PhD studies for appropriate students is also encouraged.
