Master Mathematics

  • Objectives Provides basic training for a research degree.
  • Entry requirements Mathematics graduates
  • Academic title MSc Mathematics
  • Course description Programme description

    - An intensive course covering a wide range of basic and advanced topics.
    - Intimate class environment with small class sizes (typically fewer than 20 students in a module) allowing good student-lecturer interaction.
    - A full 12 month course with a three month supervised summer project to give a real introduction to research.

Our programme consists of a wide range of modules and a project. The coursework is organised on a module system. A supervisor assists each student in choosing modules, taking a majority from the two main blocks of Pure Mathematics and Mathematical Physics. Certain modules from the Financial Mathematics programme are available for both options.

Choice of modules includes: Pure Mathematics: Basic Analysis, Fourier analysis, Operator theory, Lie groups and Lie algebras, Partial differential equations, Manifolds; Mathematical Physics: Quantum mechanics 2, Quantum field theory, Point Particles and String Theory, Supersymmetry, Mechanics, Relativity and Quantum Theory, Advanced General Relativity.

Modules can also be chosen from a wide range of undergraduate topics, eg Geometries, Galois Theory, Neural Networks, Complex Analysis, Logic, Quantum Mechanics, Linear Systems with Control Theory, Chaotic Dynamics.

Students may also take courses at other London colleges subject to approval.

    Programme format and assessment
At least eight taught modules assessed by written examinations and one individual project of approximately 10,000 words.
