Master Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

  • Objectives This course will offer you opportunities to develop a deeper, broader understanding of the language classroom, through a clear classroom focus in all taught modules. Observation and research tasks conducted in the multicultural classrooms of London schools and colleges will support your study. The course runs in parallel with the MA in International ELT and Applied Language Studies, offering some common and some independent modules. It is particularly suitable for recently qualified teachers of EFL, as well as teachers with limited experience, wanting to develop their careers in English teaching. The course attracts a wide range of students, which promotes intercultural learning.
  • Entry requirements Normally a first degree in a relevant subject (including methodology), together with some experience in the field of language teaching.

  • Course description Course structure
    You will take a total of nine modules as follows:

    -The Sociolinguistics of English in a Multilingual World
    -Intercultural Perspectives on Academic Writing and Research
    -Linguistics and Language Teaching: the Description of Language and its Pedagogic Application
    -Understanding the Language Classroom: an Introduction to the Psychology of Language Learning
    -Methodologies: Concepts and Practices

    -Classroom as Context
    -Materials Design: a Multimedia Approach
    -Young Learners
    -ESOL and the World City

    Independent Research Project

    (3 modules equivalent).

    Assessment
    A variety of methods, including seminar presentations, reports, assignments and a classroom research project.

    Progression to PhD studies for appropriate students is also encouraged.
