MRes Science

  • Objectives You will study a range of research techniques and methodologies to prepare you for developing a proposal and then undertaking the research process through to write-up and viva. You will also receive M-level support for your chosen subject area.
  • Entry requirements Applicants should normally have an honours degree (at least 2.2) in an appropriate related discipline, professional membership of an appropriate chartered institution or an equivalent relevant qualification. Holders of an appropriate higher national diploma plus several years' relevant experience may also be accepted.

  • Course description If you are aiming to enter academic research, this course will help to provide you with the skills and knowledge to be able to operate within such an environment.

    Course structure
    The course introduces you to some of the basic concepts of M-level study and above, including experimental design, scientific report writing, data analysis using appropriate statistical software and some concepts in the area of study. In two further modules you study the discipline specific. The remaining three modules are on the research process from development of the proposal through to exercises in operating mini projects and the methodology which is appropriate to transferring these skills to full-scale research programmes.

    Careers
    Graduates would be expected to go on to undertake postgraduate research within this or another university or to progress into commercial research as full-time paid employment.

    Industrial experience
    Students will undertake project work in line with their intended progress into the world of research.

    Intermediate awards
    Our master's degrees can lead to the award of a postgraduate certificate at Stage 1 (60 credits - 3 modules), a postgraduate diploma at Stage 2 (120 credits - 6 modules) or, on completion of a research project, the MSc.

    Block release study
    Our master's degrees are available on a block-release basis: you'll study for one week between 9.00am and 6.00pm with follow-up days in the next four weeks together with accompanying assignment work.
