  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements A first degree with an 'excellent' or 'very good' classification from a respected university in economics, management or a social or physical science. No work experience is required. For students from non-English-speaking countries there will be an English-language requirement. A Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score of 600 on the non-computerised TOEFL test (250+ computer-based or 100 in the iBT TOEFL test) or International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7 is required.

    Carbon management is at the heart of tackling climate change. From carbon audits and footprints to carbon trading and offsets, carbon management has become a central part of the global business environment. In this ground-breaking collaboration between the School of GeoSciences and the Business School at the University of Edinburgh, the MSc in Carbon Management provides high-level interdisciplinary skills and training in the business, economics and science of carbon management.

    This programme is designed for economics, business, social and physical science graduates wanting an advanced academic qualification as a launch pad for careers in carbon and climate change management by business, industry and government. Following four core courses in business and climate change; climate change impacts and adaptation; carbon economics; and climate change management, students have the chance to choose from a wide range of option courses offered by both Schools.

    Following successful completion of both semesters, students embark on a research dissertation project, tailored to their specific interests. Collaboration with several leading carbon management companies and projects including the Carbon Benchmarking Project, CarbonPlanet.com and the Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management (ECCM), allows students to undertake a wide range of applied projects, with excellent employment prospects after graduation.

    Learning Outcomes

    Students who follow this programme will:

        * integrate expertise in economics and business research with that in global carbon cycling, climate change impacts, adaptation and mitigation, to develop holistic understanding of carbon management;
        * develop conceptual and analytical skills to enable critical evaluation of projected climate change impacts on businesses and consumers;
        * assess the policies at international, national and local levels that have been devised to address the impacts of climate change either through adaptation or mitigation;
        * acquire key professional skills, expertise in carbon markets and international climate change mitigation mechanisms.

    How You Will Be Taught

    The MSc programme draws on a world-class lecturing team, including lead authors from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), government advisors and industry specialists.
