  • Objectives A policy and planning course that draws on expertise from a wide variety of subject areas Strong emphasis on environmental policy Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) as used by consultants, developers and local authorities in the planning process
  • Entry requirements This course is for UK and international graduates intending to take up careers as consultants, managers and advisers in private and public sectors. If you do not wish to undertake the whole programme, it is possible to register for individual taught modules.

  • Course description Programme content
    This course covers the principles and practice of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS). Other topics such as risk management and environmental protection are also covered in that techniques are used to support planning approaches in local resource management.

    Taught modules include:

    -Environmental Impact Assessment
    -Environmental GIS
    -Environmental Management
    -Land Use Planning
    -Risk
    -Research Methods

    Teaching is through a combination of lectures, seminars, presentations, site

    visits, small groups undertaking project work, and a field course. Independent learning is through guided reading, assignments, an EIA project (which provides an opportunity to undertake a simulation exercise putting into practice the EIA and GIS material covered in the first semester), and the dissertation.

    After successful completion of the taught modules, students go on to the dissertation, which allows choice of an area from amongst those covered by the course. Placements can be arranged with local or regional organisations. Students not wishing to continue onto the research project can be awarded the PgDip in Planning Sustainable Environments if leaving the course at the stage.

    Assessment
    Assessment is based on coursework throughout, including the dissertation, project reports, essays and presentations.

    Career progression
    There are opportunities in both the private and public sectors, for example in the utilities, government agencies, consultancies and research institutes.

    Entry Requirements

    -A Bachelor's degree with honours in any subject
    -An ordinary/pass degree/HNC/HND with relevant experience
    -We welcome applications from students with alternative qualifications and/or relevant experience, subject to approval through a process of Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL)
    -International students must provide evidence of proficiency in English - IELTS 6.0 band score or a score of TOEFL at 550 or above (213 computer based) with a TWE of 4.0 or above are proof of this
    -If your current English language qualification is below this level, you may be able to take one of the many pre-sessional English courses in our School of Languages

    Duration

    One year, full-time; two years (one day a week), part-time
