MSc-Postgraduate Diploma Occupational Safety and Health

  • Objectives The MSc Occupational Safety and Health is offered by the School of Life Sciences. The School has significant experience in providing courses in Health and Safety and allied disciplines including Environmental Health, Public Health, Environmental Consultancy, as well as Health, Safety and Environment. As employers are increasingly seeking to employ health and safety professionals with durable and academically rigorous qualification, UWE recognises the importance to holders of the NEBOSH Diploma to have a progression path if they wish to further their academic study. Although the course was designed with such potential students in mind, its flexibility allows graduates with a first degree in a relevant subject to benefit from this vocational postgraduate programme of study. The programme provides vocational postgraduate education in health and safety to meet the needs of the health and safety professional in confronting health issues in a range of working environments. It is designed as a postgraduate degree for those who wish to complement their existing skills and hold either the NEBOSH Diploma or an honours degree as specified in the entry requirements below. Holders of the NEBOSH Diploma will normally have the equivalent of 60 credits of prior learning to allow entry to the programme with credit and will study 120 credits of modules to complete the requirements for an MSc in Occupational Safety and Health. Honours degree entrants without the NEBOSH Diploma undertake the full 180 credits of modules. On graduation, you will have acquired advanced knowledge and developed experience in decision-making to enable you to contribute to problem solving and interventions in health and safety in the workplace in order to further protect health and reduce accidents. We recognise the range of practical and professional experience our students will bring to the programme and will utilise these different skills, engaging you in a range of learning opportunities including individual and group work situations, scenarios and case studies.
  • Entry requirements Entry is open to those who: Hold a NEBOSH Diploma. Prospective students who do not hold an honours degree or equivalent may also be asked to undertake a short course of Prior Entry Learning. It is also expected that applicants will be working within the field of Health and Safety to ensure up to date knowledge of standards and practice. Hold a relevant honours degree, normally of a lower second classification or above. Applicants are considered by an Admissions Panel and may be required to submit a portfolio of evidence. The Prior Entry Learning (PEL) short accredited course of study is normally required to be completed by applicants who are not honours degree holders before admission to the programme. It is designed to develop critical analysis and evaluation skills for new material. In addition, students are required to respond to problem based base studies which will require the application of existing knowledge and experience as well as researching information sources. The Prior Entry Learning is facilitated using the Blackboard teaching medium. Consequently, following short face to face teaching sessions, students can access the learning environment remotely at their convenience. The interactive learning techniques also allow tutors to support the students throughout the course of study. The Prior Entry Learning short course is also available to all applicants to study.
