  • Entry requirements Entry Requirements Normally a good honours degree (2:1) or equivalent in a relevant discipline. Employment or relevant educational experience will also be considered. Applicants must be able to demonstrate a strong commitment to the academic study of sport and recreation and/or extensive experience in the sport and recreation industry. Applicants whose first language is not English must also meet the language requirements set out in the College webpages.

  • Course description Programme

    This programme focuses on the study of sport policy and management practices associated with the efficient and effective delivery of sport and recreation services. Throughout the programme the underlying focus is on the way in which an understanding of the factors that contribute to successful service delivery can be used to assist in maintaining competitive business advantage.

    The taught programme has been designed to produce a balanced educational experience. Students are encouraged to consider the broader professional skills associated with the application of concepts and theoretical frameworks, as well as exploring the policy and management issues pertinent to the course. For students pursuing masters-level work this is extended to the ability to plan, conduct, analyse and disseminate their own research following the established principles of rigorous sociological and management study.

    Learning Outcomes

    This programme will enable students to:

        * examine critically key issues and social trends affecting participation and involvement in sport and recreation;
        * identify and evaluate recent changes in sport and recreation policies and management practices;
        * apply theory to the contexts of managing sport and recreation organisations.

    How You Will Be Taught

    Classes may consist of a combination of lectures, seminars, case studies, industry visits and student-led discussions. Students are expected to complete directed reading in their private study time and to prepare contributions to seminars.
    The MSc in Sport and recreation Business Management consists of two stages. The first stage (Diploma award) is designed to cover three aspects of sport and recreation business management. Social, Cultural, and Political Environments of Sport Management examines the context within which the sport and recreation industry operates. Organisational Structures, Cultures, and Behaviour in Sport Management and Operational and Financial Systems in Sport Management focus on the internal operating environment of the organisation. Marketing and Strategic Planning in Sport Management and Sport Development and Social Policy in Sport Management focus on how the organisation relates to the external operating environment.

    The second stage (Masters award) is undertaken by students who have met the entry requirements for the Masters programme following completion of the taught diploma stage. The dissertation involves students undertaking a significant piece of research with a focus on a topic in sport and recreation management. Students are allocated a supervisor who is responsible for guiding them through the research process.

    • Organisational Structures, Cultures, and Behaviour in Sport Management
    • Social, Cultural, and Political Environments of Sport Management
    • Operational and Financial Systems in Sport Management

    Semester 2
    • Marketing and Strategic Planning in Sport Management; and,
    • Sport Development and Social Policy in Sport Management

    NOTE; A further 20 credit-points must be gained from a sixth elective course which can be chosen from other programmes within the Moray House School of Education or elsewhere in the College of Humanities and Social Science.
