MTh-Diploma Theology

  • Entry requirements Entry A first or upper second class honours degree in theology, religious studies or a related subject is normally required.

  • Course description The course offers five specific pathways:

       1. Old Testament. This pathway enables students to pursue interest in Old Testament study at an advanced level. The course comprises four modules which enable the grounding in the principles of Old Testament study as well as the study of Old Testament literature, theology and canon. Each module is assessed by one essay of not more than 5000 words. The course concludes with the writing of a dissertation not exceeding 20,000 words in which students can concentrate on one major study in a related subject.

       2. New Testament. This pathway enables students to pursue interest in New Testament study at an advanced level. The course comprises four modules which enable the grounding in the principles of New Testament study as well as the study of New Testament literature and theology. Each module is assessed by one essay of not more than 5000 words. The course concludes with the writing of a dissertation not exceeding 20,000 words in which students can concentrate on one major study in a related subject.

       3. Church History. This pathway enables students to pursue interest in Church History at an advanced level. The course comprises four modules which enable the grounding in the principles of Church History as well as the study of movements and institutions, themes and thinkers and the developments during a particular period (such as the Early Church, the Reformation or the Twentieth Century). Each module is assessed by one essay of not more than 5000 words. The course concludes with the writing of a dissertation not exceeding 20,000 words in which students can concentrate on one major study in a related subject.

       4. Theology. This pathway enables students to pursue interest in Theology at an advanced level. The course comprises four modules which enable the grounding in the principles of theological study as well as the study of Christian Doctrine, themes and thinkers and issues in theology Each module is assessed by one essay of not more than 5000 words. The course concludes with the writing of a dissertation not exceeding 20,000 words in which students can concentrate on one major study in a related subject.

       5. Philosophy of Religion (subject to validation). This pathway enables students to pursue interest in Philosophy of Religion at an advanced level. The course comprises four modules which enable the grounding in the principles of philosophical study as well as the study of themes and thinkers and issues in philosophy of religion.

    Teaching

    Teaching will be by graduate seminars and individual tutorials as appropriate. Students will be given directed reading and guidance on the completion and submission of work for assessment.
