Music Composition MMus

  • Objectives You can compose in a variety of styles, including popular music, jazz, contemporary and experimental music. You will produce a folio of compositions and have the opportunity for your music to be performed by professional musicians.

  • Course description What will you study?
    You will study the principles of composition and recording techniques, plus analyse contemporary works. You will take part in practical workshops and compose music to be performed by professional musicians. Recent composition workshops have included the Arditti String Quartet, the Delta Saxophone Quartet and Chris Redgate (oboe). You will also explore professionalism in composition, issues of notation, instrumentation and critical approaches to your composition.

    You can choose to focus on studio composition rather than instrumental composition if you prefer, exploring models of sound synthesis, sound sampling and manipulation, computer-assisted composition, analysis of electroacoustic composition and practical studio composition.
