Natural Hazards Master in Science by Research

  • Objectives a) Provide students with substantive knowledge and understanding of a variety of methods, techniques and approaches that support research into natural hazards

    b) Allow and encourage students to pursue a sustained programme of original research in an appropriate field of enquiry

    c) Develop a range of professional competencies and personal transferable skills that will enable students to pursue a variety of employment opportunities or to continue with more advanced research programmes.

  • Academic title Natural Hazards Master in Science by Research
  • Course description Natural hazards, and the associated human disasters, regularly create interest in the international press and prompt responses from governments and relief agencies. This course is designed to equip students with the advanced research skills required to support a substantive piece of original research into a chosen aspect of a particular natural hazard.

    Future prospects

The Masters by Research Programme in Natural Hazards will appeal to those students who have an interest in recent, historical and geological events that have impacted on human populations. The programme will also prepare students contemplating progress to MPhil and/or PhD training programmes.

    Course content

Potential research projects relevant to the programme include non-climatic (eg earthquakes, tsunamis, subaerial slides, submarine slides, glacial hazards, permafrost hazards, periglacial hazards and aeolian hazards) as well as climatic hazards (eg hurricanes, tornadoes, blizzards, storms, desertification, storm surges, sea level rise and river floods).
