Applied Studio and Location Photography - Course

  • Course description

A course to teach you how to develop your own style through a series of photographic genres.

Ideally, you will have already completed 'Developing your Photography skills' course or feel very competent using all the full manual controls of your camera, as well as using on-camera and studio flash equipment.

The course provides access to the University College Photographic Department, for 6 Wednesday evenings.  After your studio induction, resources will be made available to you, and you will work in your own studio space in a small team on a series of professional briefs.

Using industry standard photographic equipment, your tutors will encourage you to develop a personal visual language as a photographer, and help you improve the quality of your practical work. You will expand your creative abilities and further your understanding of the latest photographic techniques, including post-production tips, tricks and techniques.

Assignments each week will help you explore a variety of areas including; ‘Still-life for Advertising’, ‘Studio and Creative Lighting Techniques’, ‘Editorial’ and ‘Fashion/Portrait Photography’.

You will choose the equipment you require for each shoot and develop your knowledge of portable lighting, diffusers, reflectors, and light-meters to use during your shoot. Your assignment will include a fashion editorial brief on location with a professional model, providing the opportunity for you to learn about model interaction.

To support your learning, mid-week assignments will be set to help you continue your learning between sessions.

    Entry requirements:

We recommend you complete 'Developing your Photography Skills' or have an equivalent understanding of the subject.
