  • Entry requirements Entrants to this postgraduate programme will normally possess a first degree or equivalent academic qualification and/or significant human resource management interest and experience. • Academic title Postgraduate Certificate Business Management
  • Course description Course content

The Certificate in Business Management seeks to develop knowledge,under-standing and practitioner competence in four distinct but related areas of management practice. Its rationale is that those who aspire to specialist roles in contemporary organisations require an underpinning knowledge of business and management to operate successfully in these positions.

The four management areas covered are:

    Managing for Results
The nature of managerial work; the work environment; quality and continuous improvement.

    Managing and Leading People
The characteristics of people; the changing world of work; optimising the people contribution.

Managing in a Strategic Business Context
The strategic framework; the external context of organisations, social responsibility and business ethics.

    Managing Information for Competitive Advantage
Decision making processes in organisations; systems; accounting and finance; statistics.

    Mode of attendance
Afternoon and evening attendance over one academic year, together with four skills development days (non-residential) which are required to obtain Licentiateship of CIPD. Dates of the skills development days will be given at the start of the course.

    Assessment
Assessment will include assignments covering both analytical and practitioner skills together with an internally assessed examination in each of the four subject areas.

    Progression routes

As indicated, possibilities include LJMU degree programmes in business studies, personnel and development, public sector management, information systems or LJMU programmes leading to professional qualifications in administration, marketing, etc.

One possible progression route is the LJMU CIPD linked Masters programme in Personnel and Development. Successful completion of the Certificate in Business Management at an appropriate level will enable students to apply for the two year Masters programme at LJMU which leads to the dual award of Graduateship of the CIPD and the Masters qualification in Personnel and Development. Those seeking entry to the Masters programme after attaining an appropriate standard at Certificate level will be interviewed to confirm their commitment to successfully complete the programme, the likely level of support they will receive from their employers, and their ability to access HR data for assignment and dissertation purposes. Assignments and the dissertation in the Masters programme relate specifically to HR practice, and therefore those joining the programme will normally work in an HR role.
