Short Course Programme Techniques in Molecular Biology

  • Objectives The aims of this theoretical and practical-based course are to introduce the individual to some of the techniques involved in DNA detection and analysis, and the associated Bioinformatics tools, covering a range of methods involved in current molecular investigations.
  • Entry requirements Entry requirements Candidates will normally be expected to possess one of the following qualifications before entry: * An Honours degree (at least a 2ii, or its equivalent) in a relevant biological subject from a UK (or equivalent) University * A professional qualification of equivalent status * Any other such qualification and experience deemed equivalent in subject content and level of attainment by the Admissions Panel In addition a good command of English is essential to enable successful completion of the programmes: * The minimum requirement is the British Council IELTS grade 6.5 or its equivalent

    The School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University is offering a series of short courses within the molecular biosciences, developed specifically for individuals within the Health Service, Pharmaceutical Industry, Biotechnology companies and related SMEs. These three day courses may also be used as a contribution towards a Masters degree.

    What do you study?

        * DNA extraction from tissues and pathological samples
        * PCR analysis to assess variation, and pathogen detection
        * Gel electrophoresis: agarose and polyacrylamide
        * DNA sequencing
        * Mutation detection, including techniques such as allele specific PCR, SSCP, heteroduplex analysis
        * Sequence analysis and alignment (ClustalW)

    Assessment
    Assessment will comprise completion of a laboratory portfolio (100%).
