Sustainable Drainage & River Catchment Management (SuDS) Master in Science

  • Academic title Sustainable Drainage & River Catchment Management (SuDS) Master in Science
  • Course description Even without the climate changes brought about by global warming, the problems of localised urban flooding and larger scale floods in rural areas would still be with us. Urban development produces increased impervious areas and agricultural practices may increase run-off rates from rural catchments. Diffuse pollution from both rural and urban environments is also a growing concern as is the increasing frequency of pollution events.

    While SuDS techniques can provide many of the tools to solve the problems, there is a need for a broader approach to catchment management that takes into account the interdependency of a number of environmental factors. This MSc course offers students the opportunity to develop core skills in SuDS and River Catchment Management while also providing broader opportunities to extend related skills in, for example, Geospatial Information Analysis, Environmental Impact Assessment, Waste Management and Environmental Law.

    This course is run in conjunction with Coventry University's Applied Research Group in Sustainable Drainage (SUDS).

    Future prospects

    The course will provide recent/new graduates the opportunity to further develop skills acquired at undergraduate level and provide them with better opportunities to enter employment in the water industry, especially within regulatory agencies, local planning authorities and environmental consultancies. However, the course is also designed to enable practitioners already in employment to advance their career prospects.

    Course content

    You can study 4 core modules (60 credits) leading to the award of a Postgraduate Certificate (PgC). Successful completion of a further 60 taught credits would make you eligible for the award of a Postgraduate Diploma (PgD). Completion of a 60-credit research project after the PgD would make you eligible for the full MSc award. Core modules for the MSc award include:

        * Sustainable Drainage Systems
        * River Catchment Management
        * Environmental Monitoring
        * Project

    Optional Modules include:

        * Geospatial Information Analysis
        * Environmental Impact Assessment
        * Environmental Modelling
        * Contaminated Land and Solid Waste Disposal
        * Environmental Law

    Additional support for international students
