    This course provides a grounding in philosophy as well as opportunities to study both the theory and practice of music. In music you will cover aspects of style, genre, history and critical thinking, with the option to take modules in performance and composition. In philosophy, you will be introduced to the subject through a series of core modules in central philosophical problems. A wide range of optional modules allows you to tailor the degree to suit your own interests and passions.

    Programme

    Year one

    In Music, you will take three core modules covering aspects of style, genre, history and critical thinking and an optional module in performance. In Philosophy, you will be introduced to the subject through a series of core modules in central philosophical problems and you will also be able to choose optional modules.

    Year two

    In Music, you may choose from a range of optional modules including Composition, Performance, Critical Thinking, Narrative and Emotion, Opera and Politics, Creative Orchestration, Notation and Transcription, Twentieth-Century Studies, Performance and Performers, Beethoven and Schubert, Classical Music and Society after 1945, Film Music, Jazz, Medieval Studies, Romanticism, and Popular Music. In Philosophy, there are further core modules in central areas and a wide variety of optional modules that allow you to develop and broaden your philosophical skills and knowledge.

    Year three

    In Music, options include Analysis, Editing, Sound Technology and Recording, Popular Music in the Cinema, the String Quartet, Gender and Culture, Messiaen, and Scandinavian Music, you may also choose to write a dissertation. In Philosophy, there will be free choice from a wide variety of more advanced modules, including the opportunity to write a dissertation on a topic of your own choosing.
