Bengali, or Bangla as it is known to Bengali speakers, is the official language of Bangladesh. It also shares official language status in India. It is one of the most widely spoken languages in the world, with over 200 million native speakers estimated worldwide.

Bengali is classed as an Eastern Indo-Ayran language of the Indo-European family of languages.  Assamese, Oriya, and Maithili are its closest relations and in some cases are considered to be mutually intelligible.  Bengali dialects are commonly categorised into eight groups, which are generally considered as: Western, Southwestern, Central (or West-Central), Northern, Bahe, Eastern, Ganda, and Vanga.  Standard Bengali is derived from the variation used by the elite classes from Kolkata (formerly known as Calcutta).   Many speakers are familiar with or fluent in both the standardised form used in the media as well as localised variants.

Written Bengali uses a type of script called alphasyllabary or an abugida that uses signs to denote consonants.  The Bengali script possesses It has 12 vowels and 52 consonant characters.
