  • Objectives
Molecular and cellular biology embraces biochemistry, genetics and cell biology and seeks molecular explanations for life processes. It involves culturing bacteria, plant and animal cells and uses the techniques of cloning, sequencing and modifying genes. It has provided us with recombinant human insulin, an effective hepatitis B vaccine, as well as the technique of DNA fingerprinting used in forensic science. The course aims to enable you to explore advances in this rapidly expanding area of biology, the techniques and concepts behind them and their impact on society. You will develop your technical and scientific competence along with your deductive analytical and communication skills. The course has a modular structure that allows you to follow your own interests. In the final year you will do an extended research project in the laboratory under the supervision of a member of staff.
